Dec 14, 2024 · Ulmus parvifolia 'cork bark' is the usual one we refer to as cork bark elm but it has been known under a range of names down here too - Ulmus davidii; Ulmus parvifolia var Davidii; Ulmus parvifolia 'Seiju' also develops corky bark but much smaller leaves. Ulmus parvifolia 'Nire Keyaki' aka Hokkaido elm also develops thick, corky bark.

Jan 26, 2020 · Having overwintered Chinese elm bonsai for twenty years, I can say trying to induce dormancy in one at the end of January is useless. Trying to induce dormancy in a tree by gradually exposing it to less and less light over a week or two misunderstands the process. I've also fund that Chinese Elm winter hardiness can vary tremendously.

Leaves of the Chinese Elm in winter: to leave or not?
Dec 4, 2022 · Right now the cherry is almost entirely leafless, pistache is in full color and the elm is still dark green. I have a regular Chinese elm that have a few yellow leaves, so is my yatsubusa, but 90% or more of them are still green. I'm sure the tree knows what it's doing, it will drop the leaves when necessary.

Nov 18, 2024 · Once the layer was removed I just left the root in the pot and in a couple of months shoots began to emerge. I now have a kabudachi clump in the making as well as the original tree with a much nicer radial root system. BTW I bought the original tree from @johng and his partner Ken Duncan back in 2017 at the WNC Bonsai Expo.
Exfoliating elm tree bark | Bonsai Nut
Jan 18, 2013 · Do elm trees exfoliate their bark after a certain age? I recently obtained an elm tree, grey bark, that is over 20years old. The bark is flaking off in large chunks. At first I thought it looked pretty cool, aged and weathered. But after learning about Dutch elm disease i wonder if that is something i should worry about.
Brown sap leaking from a dead branch stub on the Elm tree
Apr 25, 2023 · Today, at the very top of the Elm tree, I noticed this strange thing. Some brown sap leakes from the ends of two dead stubs, and this sap stains the hands, it has no smell. I immediately removed these two stubs (the other stubs look fine), cut them down to living tissue, and dusted them with a copper-containing fungicide powder.

Nov 6, 2024 · I helped the tree a bit by removing all the autumn leaves. I will leave these two long branches for part of the season to support further healing of the wounds (there is also one large one in the middle of the trunk). Hopefully, this will also help the root flare (after ground layering) develop better... The nebari looks terrible at the moment.
Winged Elm may be in distress? - Bonsai Nut
Sep 24, 2016 · My winged elm tree is starting to get yellowing leaves. I know during seasonal changes elms leaves will yellow, but I live in central Florida. It seems to be to early for this. Could my tree be dying? It has been watered regularly, same location and fertilized over a week ago with Peters fertlizer. Thanks all you nuts out there who have any advice.
