AIM-9J/N (1972): Improved USAF model, solid state electronics, high-G launch capability. First widely-used sidewinder that was actually pretty decent. Still rear-aspect only. N is a modestly improved model. AIM-9P (mid-70s): Heavily improved USAF model, pretty much as capable as rear-aspect sidewinders get. Very useable and reliable.
