Also, I've had great success with Pidgin 2.14.1, not sure if later versions work but it stops working on xp at around 2.14.6. I use it mainly for the discord plugin because it's a great alternative to using the bloated web client.

If you prefer a more native environment, look for MSYS2 (unsure about the last Windows XP version) or individual applications built with MinGW-w64 or tagged Generic. Or maybe MinGW + MSYS. CD-based encyclopedias were a huge part of my Windows 98 - early Windows XP experience. Britannica was my favorite.

WinAMP, MusicMatch Jukebox, some old Source or Eduke Engine Games, Windows Media Center Edition theme + screensavers. I also use a lot of the basic Win9x era stuff on my XP PC. XPs 9x backwards compatibility and 16bit emulation is pretty great IMHO, only the more complex DOS stuff that requires drivers won't work (well).
